FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The questions SA learners ask us most often. Honest answers, no fluff.

How old do I have to be to get my learner's permit in SA?

You must be at least 16 years old to receive your learner's permit. You can start the myLs online course from 15 years and 9 months, so you can study early and have the permit on the day you turn 16.

How many hours do I need to log before my driving test?

75 hours of supervised driving, including a minimum of 15 hours at night. Recorded in the Driving Companion logbook. Every hour with us counts and we sign your logbook on the spot.

How long do I have to hold my L's before I can do the practical test?

At least 12 months if you are under 25. At least 6 months if you are 25 or older. This is on top of the 75 logged hours, so you need both: the time and the hours. Note: the age-based shortcut only applies at the L stage. Once you pass to P1, the holding periods are the same for everyone: 12 months on P1, then 24 months on P2, regardless of your age.

What is the difference between VORT and CBT&A?

Both lead to your P1 licence. VORT (Vehicle On Road Test) is a single 45-minute practical test with an examiner. CBT&A (Competency Based Training and Assessment) is a series of driving lessons where you are assessed progressively across 30 tasks. CBT&A is no-test-deadline and lets you learn at your own pace.

Do I have to use a driving school?

No. You can learn entirely with a qualified supervising driver (a family member or friend who has held a full Australian licence for at least 2 years). But most students do better with a mix of lessons and family practice, because we know what the test examiners specifically look for and we teach proper habits before bad habits set in.

What if I fail the Theory Test?

You can re-sit. If you did myLs, you can retake it immediately at no extra cost, as many times as you need within your 12-month subscription. If you did the in-person test at Service SA, you can usually re-sit the same day, but you pay the fee each attempt. There is a 24-hour waiting period before re-attempting at Service SA.

Can I use my mobile phone on my P1?

No, not at all. On a P1 licence in SA, you cannot use a mobile phone in any way while driving, including hands-free, Bluetooth, or as a GPS. The phone must be out of reach. This restriction lifts on P2 (hands-free allowed) and on a full licence.

Do you cover my suburb?

We work in a roughly 7-kilometre radius around Firle, which covers Norwood, Payneham, Marden, Glynde, Felixstow, Magill, Campbelltown, Newton, Tranmere, Hectorville, Paradise, Athelstone, Rostrevor, Burnside, Kensington, Stepney, Royston Park and others. See the full service area or just enquire.

Will you book the test for me?

Not until we have seen you drive. Booking a test for someone we have not assessed risks a fail, which costs you the test fee and your time. After your first lesson or assessment, we can advise honestly on when to book and we can help organise it. More on our honest test-booking policy.

I have an overseas licence. Do I still need to do all this?

Probably. New Zealand licence holders are issued the equivalent SA licence directly. Other overseas drivers usually need to pass the SA Theory Test, the Hazard Perception Test, and a practical test (VORT or CBT&A). You must transfer your licence within 3 months of moving to SA. See our overseas licence conversion section.
