Adelaide Driving FAQ

Learning to drive in Adelaide & South Australia.

Straightforward answers to the questions Adelaide learner drivers, refresher students, and overseas licence holders ask most. Written by a working Adelaide driving instructor, updated for 2026 and the upcoming 2027 reform.

Getting started

How old do I need to be to get a learner's permit in South Australia?
You must be at least 16 years old to apply for a learner's permit in South Australia. You can start the theory test process from 15 years and 9 months old. To get a provisional licence (P1), you must be at least 17.
How do I get my learner's permit in SA?
To get a learner's permit in South Australia, you need to pass a theory test. You can do this online through your mySAGOV account using the myLs course, or in person at a Service SA centre. Once you pass, you can collect your learner's permit at a Service SA customer service centre.
How long is the learner's permit valid for in SA?
A South Australian learner's permit is valid for 2 years. During that time you must complete the required supervised driving hours and pass the Hazard Perception Test before progressing to a P1 provisional licence.

Learning to drive

How many supervised driving hours do I need in South Australia?
SA learner drivers must complete at least 75 hours of supervised driving, including a minimum of 15 hours at night. These hours must be recorded in the official Driving Companion log book with a qualified supervising driver or a licensed driving instructor.
How long is the learner period in SA?
You must hold your SA learner's permit for at least 12 months if you are between 17 and 24 years old. If you are 25 or older, the minimum learner period is 6 months.
Do I have to learn with a driving instructor in SA?
You can learn with a qualified supervising driver (such as a parent or family member who has held a full licence for at least two years), with a licensed driving instructor, or both. Most learners use a combination. A driving instructor brings professional teaching technique, hazard perception coaching, and test-readiness assessment that family supervisors typically cannot match.
Do you teach driving in Hindi or Punjabi?
Yes. My Driving Trainer provides driving instruction in English, Hindi, and Punjabi. This is especially useful for new arrivals, overseas licence converters, and learners who prefer to receive technical driving instruction in their first language.

The driving tests

What is the practical driving test in SA?
SA learner drivers can pass their practical test through one of two methods. Option 1 is the Vehicle On Road Test (VORT), a single one-off test conducted with a qualified instructor. Option 2 is Competency Based Training and Assessment (CBT&A), where you complete a series of assessed driving tasks over several sessions with a CBT-licensed instructor. From the first half of 2027, the practical test will move to government examiners in government vehicles under the SA Driver Training Reform.
What is the Hazard Perception Test in South Australia?
The Hazard Perception Test (HPT) is a computer-based test that assesses how well you can identify and react to potentially dangerous driving situations. SA learner drivers must pass the HPT before progressing from a learner's permit to a P1 provisional licence.
Can I take the Hazard Perception Test online in SA?
Yes. The Hazard Perception Test is now available online in South Australia as an alternative to taking it in person at a Service SA centre. You can complete it from home with a 12-month subscription.

The 2027 SA reform

What is the SA Driver Training Reform 2027?
The SA Driver Training Reform is the biggest change to how learner drivers are tested in South Australia in decades. From the first half of 2027, the practical driving test will be conducted by government examiners in government vehicles, not by private operators. Private instructors will continue to deliver lessons under new standards including a Code of Conduct, mandatory cameras, GPS, and dual brakes in instructor vehicles. How will the SA driving test change from 2027?
From the first half of 2027, the SA practical driving test will be conducted by approximately 40 newly created government examiner roles, in government vehicles instead of instructor cars. Driving lessons themselves will still be delivered by private instructors, but instructor vehicles will require cameras, GPS, and dual brakes, and instructors will need to follow a mandatory Code of Conduct. P plates & full licence

What restrictions apply to P1 drivers in SA?
P1 drivers in South Australia must have zero blood alcohol concentration, cannot use a mobile phone in any capacity including hands-free and navigation, must not exceed 100 km/h on any road, and are restricted from driving high-powered vehicles. P1 drivers under 25 also face passenger restrictions and late-night driving restrictions.
How long are you on P1 plates in SA?
In South Australia you must hold a P1 provisional licence for at least 12 months. Provided you have no licence breaches or suspensions, you automatically progress to a P2 provisional licence at the end of that 12-month period.
What is the difference between P1 and P2 in South Australia?
P1 is the first stage of provisional licensing in SA. You must hold P1 for 12 months and follow stricter rules including no mobile phone use of any kind. P2 is the second stage and lasts 24 months. P2 drivers no longer need to display P plates and can use hands-free mobile, but still face restrictions including zero blood alcohol and a 100 km/h speed limit.
When can I get my full SA driver's licence?
To progress to a full SA driver's licence, you must hold a provisional licence for a total of 3 years (1 year on P1 plus 2 years on P2) without any disqualifications, and be at least 20 years old.

Overseas conversion

Can I convert my overseas driving licence in South Australia?
Yes. Overseas licence holders can convert their licence to a South Australian one. The process and requirements depend on the country your licence was issued in. Some require only a theory test, others require both theory and practical tests. From 2027, the practical test for overseas licence conversion will be conducted by government examiners in government vehicles.
Do you offer refresher driving lessons for licensed drivers?
Yes. My Driving Trainer offers refresher lessons for fully licensed drivers who have been away from driving, want to build confidence on Adelaide roads, are switching from manual to automatic, or are adjusting to a new vehicle type such as an EV. Refresher lessons do not require any test.
